In order to prove his or her identity, every citizen must have a national identity card.
Applications should be made to the Administrative Formalities services, subject to certain conditions.
National identity cards for adults
National identity cards are valid for a period of 15 years for citizens who have reached the age of majority. When making a first application, citizens must go to the Administrative Formalities services taking with them:
- 2 identical, recent identity photographs that comply with regulations
- recent proof of address (original+copy) If staying with another person, the host must provide a certificate of accommodation plus original and copy of the host’s ID document
- original birth certificate issued less than 3 months previously (full version or extract stating filiation).
Renewal of national identity card
- 2 identical, recent identity photographs that comply with regulations
- proof of address (original+copy)
- Original and copy of the identity card to be renewed
- birth certificate if the identity card expired more than two years ago
In case of loss or theft, the citizen must submit a statement. (to the Administrative Formalities services in case of loss, at the police station in case of theft) . The following documents must be provided:
- 2 identical, recent identity photographs that comply with regulations
- proof of address (original+copy) If staying with another person, the host must provide a certificate of accommodation plus original and copy of the host’s ID document
- cerfa proforma to declare the loss to be filled in at the desk
- fiscal stamp to the value of €25
- original birth certificate issued less than 3 months previously (full version or extract stating filiation)
National identity card for a minor : valid for a period of 10 years
From the time a child is born, a national identity card can be applied for at the Administrative Formalities Services. The application should be made by the parents with the child present. the documents to be provided are as follows:
- 2 identical, recent identity photographs that comply with regulations
- the ID document of the parent submitting the application(original+copy)
- proof of address, (original+copy)
- Original and copy of the national identity card to be renewed
- original birth certificate issued less than 3 months previously (full version or extract stating filiation)
- To renew a national identity card, the minor must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The old national identity card must be returned together with the supporting documents:
- 2 identical identity photographs that comply with regulations
- the ID document of the parent submitting the application(original+copy)
- proof of address (original+copy)
- original birth certificate issued less than 3 months previously (full version or extract stating filiation)..if the national identity card expired more than 2 years previously, also the original and copy of national identity card to be renewed
In case of loss or theft of national identity card, the minor must go in person to the office with a parent to fill in the relevant cerfa proforma. Applications for a national identity card, in case of loss or theft, are subject to a fee (fiscal stamp to the value of €25). The following documents must be provided:
- 2 identical identity photographs that comply with regulations,
- the ID document of the parent submitting the application(original+copy)
- proof of address, (original+copy)
- cerfa proforma to declare the loss to be filled in at the desk
- fiscal stamp to the value of €25
- original birth certificate issued less than 3 months previously (full version or extract stating filiation).
In cases where the parents are divorced or separated, you must contact the Services to find out the documents to be provided.
